KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Kentucky softball team fell to Tennessee in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Tyson Park.

UT’s Jackie Beavers pitched a two-hit shutout as the Volunteers captured a 4-0 victory in the first game. Beavers improved to 22-9 on the season.

The Vols struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kelli Fitzgerald doubled to score Lisa Warren and April Phillips. Carrie Swinford followed with a double to right field as Fitzgerald scored, giving UT a 3-0 lead. The Vols added a run in the bottom of the fourth for the game’s final margin.

Nadia Cameron led UT by going 2-3 at the plate.

UK pitcher Jennifer Howland took the loss as she fell to 5-15 this season.

In the second game, the Vols edged the Wildcats, 3-2, despite UK leaving eight runners on base and committing four errors.

UT led 3-0 going into the top of the fifth inning when UK finally got on the scoreboard. UK designated player Colleen Boddy singled to center, scoring Shanna Martini and Leslie Kwiatkowski.

Beavers picked up the win for UT while Keary Camunas took the loss for UK, dropping her record to 13-20.

Tiffany Kruse and Boddy each had two hits apiece for the Cats.

UK returns to action on Sunday when the Cats and Vols square off in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The doubleheader marks UK’s final two games of the 1999 season.
