LEXINGTON, Ky. – After splitting with Dayton yesterday, the University of Kentucky softball team will play host Morehead State on Thursday evening at the UK SoftballComplex.
The doubleheader between the Wildcats and Eagles is set to begin at 6 p.m.It was originally scheduled for March 9, but was postponed due to rain.
Morehead (18-12) is on a seven-game winning streak and has won 10 out ofits last 13 games. The Eagles swept Eastern Kentucky in a pair of 1-0 gameson Tuesday.
Nola Queen has started all 30 games for the Eagles this season and leadsMorehead at the plate with a .341 batting average. Queen also leads theteam in runs (19), hits (29), RBI (24), triples (2) and home runs (5).
Last year, UK swept the Eagles at Morehead, 4-1 and 7-0. The Wildcatslead the overall series between the two schools, 3-1.On Tuesday, UK (19-29, 3-9 SEC) split a two-game series with Dayton atStewart Field. In the opening game, UK could not push any runners acrossand left seven runners on base as the Flyers won 1-0.
UK pitcher Jennifer Howland struck out three batters but took the loss forthe Wildcats.
In the second game, Shanna Martini’s one-out single in the top of thefirst inning scored UK’s Leslie Kwiatkowski and Tiffany Kruse to give theWildcats a 2-0 lead.
Leading 3-1, UK scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning which wasstarted by Martini’s leadoff triple, her first triple of the season.
Angie Dal Pozzo flied out to score Martini from third. Michelle Bucci andLeslie Kwiatkowski then hit back-to-back singles as UK built a 6-1 lead.The Wildcats held on for a 6-2 victory.
Colleen Boddy earned the win for the Wildcats, moving her record to 4-8 onthe season while Keary Camunas picked up her fourth save. Kwiatkowski wasUK’s leading hitter on the day by going 5-8 with 2 RBI. She also stolethree bases and scored a run.
