Freshman Lyndsey Angus helps lead Cats to win.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 20, 2000) — Led by freshman Lyndsey Angus,the University of Kentucky softball team defeatedWestern Kentucky, 11-3, in five innings due to themercy rule on Thursday evening at the UK SoftballComplex. Angus went 3-for-3 with two RBIs andscored three runs. She was a triple away from hittingfor the cycle.
Angus hit her first career home run, a solo shot overthe left field fence in the bottom of the first inning togive the Cats a 1-0 lead over the visiting LadyToppers.
UK (26-22) added another run in the second onfreshman Jamie Dardis’ RBI-single to left field asTiffany Kruse scored from third. After lead off doubleto start the third inning, Angus scored from third onAngie Dal Pozzo’s RBI-single to left field.
The game was stopped in the bottom of the fourth dueto a tornado watch and thunderstorms in the area.After a one hour and fifty minute rain delay, the gameresumed at 8:50 p.m.
When the two teams resumed, the Cats tacked on three more runs on four hits.Beth Fogle reached base on a throwing error by WKU third baseman ShanonSearle, allowing Nikki Jones and Jen Howland. Angus’ RBI-single to center fieldscored Fogle as UK built a 6-0 lead.
WKU (24-19-1) got on the board in the top of the fifth as the Lady Toppersrecorded four doubles in inning off UK starter Howland. WKU’s three runstrimmed the lead to 6-3.
However, UK struck back in the bottom of the fifth with five runs, giving the Catsan 11-3 victory over WKU in the first meeting between the two teams. Howlandimproved to 7-5 with the victory, while WKU starter Amber Garlington dropped to15-11.
All nine UK batters recorded a hit as the Cats tallied 14 hits as team. Jones,Kruse, and Howland recorded two hits apiece, while Fogle scored a run andKwiatkowski drove in two runs.
“Offensively, we really hit the ball well tonight,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “Itcertainly helps us build some momentum going into our weekend series withFlorida.”
The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.
UK returns to action on Friday, April 21, when the Cats play host to the FloridaGators in a pivotal four-game series at the UK Softball Complex. Thedoubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. UK head basketball coach Tubby Smith willthrow out the first pitch before the doubleheader.
