LEXINGTON, Ky. — Led by pitcher Keary Camunas, the Southeastern Conference Eastern Divisionleading Kentucky softball team defeated the Florida Gators, 3-0, Sundayafternoon at the UK Softball Complex for its fourth straight victory.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended after six inningsbecause Florida had to make its scheduled flight out of the Lexington BlueGrass Airport. The Gators were leading 7-6 when the game was stopped afterthe bottom of the sixth inning. Neither team will be credited with a win ora loss until the league announces a decision this week.
Camunas’ four-hit shutout was her second consecutive in as many startsagainst the Gators during the weekend. The senior from Lake Forest, Calif.,did not give up a run and allowed just eight hits in the two games shestarted. Camunas owns eight shutouts this season and 20 for her career.
UK (30-22, 11-8 SEC) did all of its damage in the bottom of the firstinning as freshman Nikki Jones drew a leadoff walk from UF starting pitcherBeth Dieter. Freshman Lyndsey Angus singled down the left field line,advancing Jones to third. Leslie Kwiatkowski followed with a bases clearingtriple to right field, scoring Jones and Angus. Tiffany Kruse reached on anerror by Gator second baseman Prissie Walden as Kwiatkowski scored, givingthe Cats a 3-0 victory.
Dieter lost her third straight game, dropping to 17-11 on the season.Kwiatkowski led UK at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run.
In the second game of the doubleheader, UF (37-23, 7-11) bolted to a 6-0lead when the Gators pounded out six hits off UK starter Morgan Marr in thesecond inning.
In the third inning, Kwiatkowski’s two-run single down the left field linecut the Gators lead to 6-2.
The Gators added a run in the fourth when Jen Lutsi scored on firstbaseman Ashley Boone’s RBI-double to right center.
Angus blasted her second home run of the series over the left field fenceas UK trimmed UF’s lead to 7-3. In the Cats’ five games during the week,Angus went 9-for-14 with five RBIs, three home runs, a double, and eightruns scored.
UK put three more runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning. JamieDardis’ bases-loaded, RBI-single to left scored Kruse. Angie Dal Pozzoscored from third on a passed ball. Jones singled to center, scoring AndreaEilertson from third. Colleen Boddy and Lyndsey Angus flied out to right toend the inning and the game was suspended.
“Keary was phenomenal for us all weekend, pitching two big shutouts,” UKcoach Beth Kirchner said. “Lyndsey was fantastic at the plate. Those tworeally had an outstanding weekend for us. We still have some tweaking to dodefensively, but to get the win today in the first game was huge.”
UK returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 when the Cats travel to faceMorehead State. The doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.
