Tigers take both games from Wildcats in Friday’s doubleheader.

BATON ROUGE, La. (April 28, 2000) — The University of Kentuckysoftball team dropped a doubleheader to theseventh-ranked LSU Tigers Friday night at Tiger Park.The Southeastern Conference Western Divisionleading Tigers captured the opener 2-0, and then usedtwo big innings in the nightcap en route to a 7-0victory.

Led by strong pitching performances from KearyCamunas and Britni Sneed in the opener, the Catsand the Tigers battled to a scoreless tie through thefirst five innings before LSU drew first blood in thesixth.

LSU second baseman Stephanie Hastings reachedon a bunt single and Tara Asbill followed with sacrificebunt, moving Hastings to second. Ashlee Ducotereached on an error by UK third baseman AndreaEilertson and Hastings advanced to third. Firstbaseman Shaunte’ Fremin singled back to the pitcher,scoring Hastings as LSU took a 1-0 lead. Designatedplayer Ashley Lewis singled to left as Ducote scoredfrom third for the game’s final margin.

Sneed struck out six batters, improving to 21-5 on the season. Camunas, whostruck out four, fell to 18-12.

In the nightcap, UK (32-25, 11-11 Southeastern Conference) squandered apotential scoring chance in the top of the third when Nikki Jones was picked offat first with runners on first and third and two out to end the inning.

LSU (49-8, 22-5) used three hits and three UK errors in the fourth to take a 3-0lead. An inning-ending double play allowed the Cats to escape.

The Tigers put four more runs on the board in the fifth as six of the first sevenLSU batters in the inning hit safely, completing the sweep over the visiting Cats.

Ashley Lewis improved to 19-3 with the win, while Jen Howland dropped to 8-6.Jones recorded two hits for the Cats.

UK returns to action on Sunday, April 30 when the Cats travel to Fayetteville,Ark., to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. The doubleheader will begin at 1p.m. (EST).
