Georgia Box Score

MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Kentucky softball team completed day two of the Fun & Sun Classic in Miami, Fla., with a win and a loss. The Cats defeated host Florida International in the first game, 3-2, and fell to No. 17 Georgia, 5-2.

Kentucky got their first win of the season in the day’s first game against host Florida International. The Golden Panthers got on the board in the first inning Jennifer Owens singled home Stephanie Wolter. They added to the 1-0 lead in the third when a double by Cindy Turek brought home Wolter.

The Cats tied the game in the top of the fifth. Following a bunt single by junior Crystalie Wolfe and a walk by sophomore Megan Brooks, sophomore Brook Bowman beat out an infield single, loading the bases. Nikki Jones hit a dribbler to the first baseman who threw out Wolfe at home. Junior Rachel Friberg then hit a grounder that was bobbled by the second baseman, allowing Brooks and Bowman to score. With the score tied at two in the top of the sixth, freshman Ingrid Lochelt hit her first career home run over the right-centerfield fence. The run proved to be the game-winner as Kentucky held FIU scoreless in the last two innings. Freshman Amy Kendall got her first win on the mound as a Wildcat.

Despite the win, the Cats were seeded fourth and faced undefeated Georgia for the second time.

For the first time in the tournament, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard first. Amy Kendall singled home Nikki Jones who had gotten to second after she singled and Lyndsey Angus walked. The Bulldogs’ second baseman was unable to handle a blooper by Jessica Nance and Angus came around from second to give Kentucky the 2-0 lead.

But 17th-ranked Georgia came back, putting a run on the board in the first, two in the second one in each of the fourth and sixth innings as Kentucky fell 5-2. Bulldog pitchers Nicole Urban and Lacey Gardner combined to hold the Cats to one hit.

The Cats will take on Illinois State in the consolation game Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET. ISU fell to FIU in the second seeded game.
