University of Kentucky seniors Lyndsey Angus and Nikki Jones were named to the All-SEC Second Team, it was announced today by conference commissioner Mike Slive. The two teams were voted on by the league’s coaches. Angus was a first team catcher her sophomore and junior years while Jones was named to the second team her sophomore year and first team last season.
Angus caps off a remarkable career at Kentucky as the second leading batter in UK history. Her .384 batting average this season is good enough for fourth best in the record books and helped her improve her career average to .360.
In conference games, she led the entire league with a .429 average. Her .532 on-base percentage was the second highest in the league. She either led or shared the lead with all SEC catchers with 33 hits, 17 runs, one triple, 16 walks, 24 assists, 9 runners caught stealing and a .636 slugging percentage.
The Leominster, Mass., native walked 27 times this year, breaking the UK single season walks record she set her sophomore year and tied her junior year. Her 98 career walks not only smashes the Kentucky record but also moves her into fourth place in the SEC career record books.
This season, Angus led the team in runs (35), home runs (7), slugging percentage (.589) and walks (27). Besides the bases-on-balls record, Angus also established a top single-season mark for on-base percentage (.478). She is the career leader in that category with a .440 percentage.
Jones led the team in batting for the second straight year. Her .388 season average is the third highest mark in UK history and puts her at the top spot for career batting average (.365). As the lead-off batter for all but two games, the Suisun, Calif., native was tops for Kentucky this year with 183 at-bats, 71 hits, 11 doubles, five triples, 25 multi-hit games, and 95 total bases.
In SEC games, Jones was tied for the top spot in hits (39) with Georgia’s Nicole Barber. Her .415 SEC batting average was good enough for the fourth spot.
A starter at second base the entire season, Jones was part of an infield that led the conference in double plays in SEC play (14) and overall (27). She tied her own UK record when she hit safely in 14-consecutive games from Feb. 22-Mar. 16. That included a six-game multi-hit streak.
