Ashley Fertic led the Kentucky softball team to a split with the Indiana Hoosiers Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. The contests marked the last home games for the Cats in the 2004 season.
Feritc delivered her second RBI of the day with a two-out single in the second inning of game two to give UK an early 1-0 advantage. IU?s Tory Yamaguchi knotted the game in the fourth with a solo home run, but Fertic drove in her third run of the day in the bottom of the frame with another RBI single. The Hoosiers closed the gap to one, 3-2, with a run in the fifth, but Amber Janneck tacked on her 12th long bomb of the season for the final 4-2 margin.
The Hoosiers threatened by loading the bases in the seventh, but Gretchen Prugh recorded the last two outs of the inning in relief without giving up a run to secure the victory.
Janneck had a nice appearance at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Amy Kendall won her 10th game of the year on the mound, going 6.1 innings while giving up just six hits and one earned run.
A solo home run from Lauren Hines put the Hoosiers on top 1-0 in the fourth inning, but UK answered in the fifth on an RBI-double from Fertic to tie the game. IU added two insurance runs in the seventh on three base hits to secure the 3-1 win. The Cats left six runners on base in the contest, three of which were in scoring position.
The Cats return to Southeastern Conference action this weekend, when they travel to Auburn, Ala. to meet the Auburn Tigers in a three-game series.
* Members of the UK football team defeated the men?s basketball team in a home run derby in between games, 4-3. The football team has won the contest for three consecutive years. Claude Sagaille led the victorious squad with two of the four blasts.
