LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky softball team will play its next 10 games away from the friendly confines of the UK Softball Complex, beginning with a Wednesday showdown against in-state rival Eastern Kentucky. The Wildcats and Colonels will play a single game at 3 p.m. at EKU?s Gertrude Hood Field.
The Colonels (6-7) have won four of their last five games and are coming off a second-place finish at the last weekend?s EKU Comfort Suites Invitational. Eastern is currently leading the Ohio Valley Conference in batting average (.277) and junior Kelsey Anderson is tied for first in the league with 14 RBI.
The teams have met 17 times win the past with Kentucky holding an 11-6 series advantage. The Wildcats have won the last three times the schools have faced off, including a 2-0 win in Lexington last season.
The Wildcats have won four straight and are now 11-6 on the year which matches its best start in school history. UK went 11-6-1 through its first 18 games in 2004.
Katie Campbell leads the Cats and is ranked sixth in the Southeastern Conference with her .447 batting average. The junior hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI during the Cats? run to the title at the Frostbite Classic last weekend in Lexington. As a team, the Cats are batting .312 which ranks them fifth in the SEC.
?We are little worn out after a big and cold Frostbite Classic weekend, but we need to re-focus for Eastern Kentucky,? said head coach Eileen Schmidt. ?They always have a good team so it is important for us to get our jobs done and be on top of things tomorrow.?
