LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Fresh off its first series conference win this past weekend, the University of Kentucky softball team will welcome top-15 ranked LSU to the UK Softball Complex for a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
Sophomore Natalie Smith?s two-run single in the top of the seventh inning lifted Kentucky to a 4-2, victory Sunday at Ole Miss to clinch its first conference series since 2007. Smith went 3-for-4 on the day bringing in three runs and adding a double to her impressive outing. Fittingly, the second baseman also made the last out of the game on a pop-up to preserve the win.
Sophomore right-hander Amber Matousek went the distance for the Blue and White tossing seven complete innings while fanning five batters in her ninth win of the season. Matousek has amassed career-highs in strikeouts (98), innings pitched (136.0) and wins (nine) in just her second season in the circle.
Freshman Megan Yocke tallied her first career home run this weekend with a solo shot over the left field fence in the game one win against the Rebels. Fellow classmate Meagan Aull enjoyed a 3-for-3 day at the dish in the game-one win. Aull and sophomore Destinee Mordecai were the Wildcats who crossed the plate on Smith?s game-winning single Sunday.
Sophomore Molly Johnson leads the team offensively, batting .414 on the season while leading the team with 28 RBI, five home runs, 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases.
LSU is coming off six consecutive losses in conference play, having been swept by nationally ranked top-five Florida and Alabama in consecutive weeks. The Tigers hold an impressive record against Kentucky, having only dropped one game in 26 contests. The one victory against the Tigers is the tied with Alabama for the least amount of victories against an SEC opponent for the Blue and White. The Tigers currently have a six-game winning streak over UK.
