LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky softball team will add top-13 national rankings to its already historical 2011 season following the release of both major polls. Kentucky is ranked No. 12 in the final USA Softball poll and comes in at No. 13 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association final tallies announced Tuesday. UK has never been among the top-25 rated teams in the country to conclude a season.
The Wildcats’ history-making season concluded with a school-record 40 wins and six single-season offensive records. UK knocked off 12 top-25 ranked opponents throughout the season, won a school-best five Southeastern Conference series, appeared in a third consecutive NCAA Tournament and advanced to the final field of 16 in the national tournament playing host to California in the Super Regionals for the first time in the history of the program.
Kentucky first entered the polls in the first week of the season after charting a 3-1 weekend to open the season which included an upset of then-ranked No. 22 Ohio State. UK was then among the top-25 rated teams for the remainder of the regular season reaching as high as No. 15 in late April.
The Wildcats are one of four SEC squads ranked among the nation’s top-15 teams. Florida holds steady at No. 2 in both polls, with Alabama earning a No. 3 rating and Georgia claiming the No. 9 spot in both polls. Tennessee and LSU also appear in the top-25 to mark six of the league’s 11 squads among the top-25 teams in the nation to finish the 2011 season.
