Wildcats Find Friday Victory in Missouri to Begin the Weekend
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 45 Kentucky (11-7, 3-4 SEC) defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Missouri (10-9, 1-6 SEC) 4-1 on Friday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats secured the doubles point for the 13th time in 16 matches starting the day off strong. The Kentucky duo of Ellie Eades and Zoe Hammond defeated their Tiger opponents, Andrea Artimedi and Emelie Schwarte, 6-0 on Court 2. Clinching the doubles point was No. 63-nationally ranked doubles pair Elizabeth Stevens and Carlota Molina who came out on top in their matchup against Mizzou’s Inah Canete and Mae Canete, 6-2.
With Kentucky up 1-0 leading into singles play, the Cats were ready to keep up the fight. Maialen Morante was the first Wildcat to finish singles play quickly defeating Mizzou’s Andrea Artimedi, 6-1, 6-1. UK was up with the advantage of two points when the Tigers made things interesting earning a point of their own to put themselves on the scoreboard. Freshman Hammond fell to Missouri’s Inah Canete on Court 5, 6-3, 7-5.
Keeping the match alive for Kentucky on Court 1 was the ranked pairing of No. 48 Florencia Urrutia and No. 75 Mae Canete. Flor, not a stranger to ranked battles this season, found herself victorious once again as she won her sets 6-4, 6-3.
Needing just one more point to clinch the match, Molina on Court 3 came out on top to earn the Cats’ third SEC victory of the season. She quickly defeated Schwarte with a 6-2, 7-5 win. Both Lidia Gonzalez and Eades’ singles matchups were left unfinished as Kentucky completed the day, 4-1.
Kentucky returns its weekend road trip heading to No. 65 Arkansas on Sunday for a Noon EST contest in Fayetteville, Ark.
