Jacob Cook Cards Career-Low Round to Lead on Final Day

by Deb Moore

STATESBORO, Ga. – Jacob Cook carded a career-low-tying 6-under 66 and earned a career-best tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard to pace the Kentucky men’s golf team on the final day of play at the Schenkel Invitational on Sunday. Cook secured his fourth top-10 finish of the season with his impressive final round score to lead the Wildcats to fourth in the event.

“We are close, so very close,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “I love the trend this team is on even though we didn’t quite finish like we wanted today. A 66 from Jacob Cook led the way and was huge from our team captain. We will prepare for a few days and head to the Hootie next week and keep improving.”

Georgia Southern won the tournament with a 25-under score. No. 17 Notre Dame finished in second behind a 9-under final round and an 18-under scorecard for the weekend. College of Charleston edged the Wildcats by five strokes for third place.

Kentucky resumes action at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate beginning on March 27. The three-day, 54- hole event will be played at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina.

Cook was simply sensational during his final round equaling his career-low round and marking a career-low finish. The Frankfort, Kentucky, native began the round with four straight pars before birdying each of his next five holes to make the turn at 5-under par. He yielded a shot back at the 13th but responded with a birdie on the very next hole. A birdie at the par-five 18th topped the round in style to get to a 6-under score and move into the top five.

He has earned four top-10 finishes this season and played par or better in each of his three rounds this week to push his season total to 12 rounds of par or lower.

Campbell Kremer finished just one shot off a career-matching record. He was 2-under par for the tournament and fired a 214 over the three rounds. Kremer earned an even-par 72 on Sunday and finished in 16th overall. The finish matched a career best. The Louisville, Kentucky, native was par or better during all three rounds this week which is the first time he’s achieved that feat in his career.

Garrett Wood played 2-over par on Sunday but finished in a tie for 18th overall with an even-par 216 for the week. It is Wood’s fourth top-20 finish of the season and his team-leading 14th of his career.

Alex Goff shot a 77 on the final day and finished in a tie for 49th, while Zach Norris carded an 80 and tied for 76th. Hugo Archer, playing as an individual, had his best round of the week with an even-par 72 and tied for 61st.
