Cole Stockard Crowned SEC Freshman of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s golf freshman Cole Stockard was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Wednesday, earning the honor following his medalist performance at the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational this past week. It marks the third Freshman of the Week honor for Stockard from the conference this season.
Stockard found himself atop the leaderboard in the 92-player field at the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the Wildcats at the University Club of Kentucky on Monday and Tuesday. The native of Dalton, Georgia was even par for the tournament, matching Marquette’s Vinny Cervantes for low individual.
The win gives Stockard two victories on his freshman campaign, as he was also crowned champion at UK’s other home event, the Cullan Brown Collegiate, this past October. Stockard is the first Kentucky men’s golfer to win twice in a year since J.B. Holmes in 2003-04, and the first freshman to do so since Holmes during the 2001-02 season.
Stockard’s week was highlighted by a bogey-free card of 67 (-4) in round two, the best round by any player in the tournament and the only bogey-free round in the event. He was 2-under par on par 4s for the week, leading the field in par 4 scoring average.
Stockard’s efforts helped the Wildcats secure the team title at their home course, giving Kentucky its second team victory of the spring.
Kentucky is back in action for the SEC Championship, April 22-26, at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
