Kentucky Tied for Second as Darkness Sets on Day One of Cullan Brown Collegiate

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s golf is in second place at 5-under par after day one of the third annual Cullan Brown Collegiate at Lexington Country Club (par 71, 7255 yards).

Hosting a field of 15 teams, the Cats posted a 3-under team score in round one, and were 2-under as a group in the second round, before darkness forced the suspension of play with just a few holes remaining on Monday. UK is tied with Mississippi State for second as a team, just three shots behind the tournament leader, Tennessee.

Round two will resume at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Players will then move directly into the final round in the same pairings.

Six Wildcats find themselves at par-or-better at the end of day one, including four of Kentucky’s five starters. Sophomore Gabriel Hull and junior Gavin Clutts lead the way for UK, with both players in a tie for fifth at 3-under par. Hull went 1-over in his opening round but is 4-under in round two through 17 holes. The transfer from Emmanuel University was 2-under par on the par 3s, tied for the best par-3 scoring mark in the field. Clutts, meanwhile, opened with a 70 (-1) and his 2-under on his second round with two holes to play. He made just two total bogeys on day one, tied for the third fewest among the 88 competitors, and was 4-under par on the par 5s.

Both Hull and Clutts are four shots off the individual lead, held by Western Kentucky’s William Easterlin.

Cameron Phillips also resides in the upper portion of the leaderboard, as the sophomore is tied for 12th at 2-under par. Phillips had Kentucky’s best score on the opening 18 holes, carding a 3-under par, 68, powered by five birdies. He is 1-over par on his second round with two holes to play after rolling in a birdie putt on No. 18 (par 5, 571 yards) to finish the day.

Three Cats, Bradford Lacefield, Jacob Lang and Cole Stockard, find themselves in a tie for 26th at even par. For Lacefield, this week’s tournament marks the first of his college career. The native of Versailles, Kentucky impressed with a 70 (-1) in round one which featured a 33 (-3) on LCC’s back nine. Lang (70) and Stockard (71) both signed for scores at par-or-better in round one, their fourth and eighth such rounds this season, respectively.

Senior Luke Coyle, competing as an individual, is tied for 53rd at 5-over, while Jacob Settles is tied for 70th at 9-over par.

Kentucky is the only team in the field under-par on par 3s, with a 1-under team total. The Cats’ starting lineup had just one double-bogey on the day, giving them the fewest doubles or worse of any team.
