Kentucky Goes 5-Over Par on Final Day at Williams Cup

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Kentucky men’s golf team finished in 12th place at the Williams Cup after a final round score of 293 (+5) on Tuesday at Eagle Point Golf Club (par 72, 7353 yards).

The Wildcats’ final round marked the best score for the team this week. The team’s 13 combined birdies over the final 18 holes were also the most for the Cats in any round this tournament.

Gavin Clutts, Jacob Lang and Cameron Phillips each provided 1-over par totals, while Gabriel Hull was the final counting score at 2-over par. The four counting scorers were a combined 3-under par over their final nine holes of the tournament.

The Williams Cup featured an elite field which included seven teams ranked inside the top 25 in the Scoreboard Powered by Clippd rankings. The Cats edged out No. 11 Notre Dame by two shots this week for an important head-to-head win.

“I was proud of the way the guys fought this week, especially on our back nine today,” head coach Gator Todd said. “We improved each day and that’s something to be proud of. The Williams Cup is a one-of-a-kind tournament. It’s an incredible test against an elite field and we got to see where we stacked up this week. We’re not where we want to be yet, but we’ll get there. I believe in this group.”

Hull finished the tournament as the highest-placing Wildcat, tying for 28th at 4-over par in the field of 81 players. The sophomore birdied two of his final three holes of the day, with threes on both No. 7 (par 4, 333 yards) and No. 8 (par 4, 453 yards) to end his tournament on a high note. Hull made 42 pars over the 54-hole event, tied for the second-most pars in the field. He wraps up the fall with what is his second-best finish in five starts at Kentucky.

Lang posted his second consecutive 73 (+1) on Tuesday, ending the week in a tie for 34th at 5-over par total. The junior played the par 3s in 1-under par for the tournament, tied for the second-best score by any player.

Clutts managed his best finish as a starter this season by tying for 41st at 6-over par. The junior closed with a 1-over round of 73, which included a 33 (-3) on Eagle Point’s front nine, Clutts’ final nine holes of the day.

Cole Stockard shot 75 (+3) in round three to finish T66 at 12-over par. He made three birdies on the final day, including two on par 5s.

After struggling in rounds one and two, Phillips came back on Tuesday to shoot 73 and finish the tournament tied for 71st at 14-over par. He made three birdies in the final round including back-to-back birdies on No. 5 (par 3, 207 yards) and No. 6 (par 5, 549 yards).
