Wildcats Complete Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wildcats finished the final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Wednesday at the Long Cove Club.

Kentucky completed the tournament just short of the top 10, finishing in 11th place overall. The Cats saw much improvement over the course of three days of play moving from a first-day finish tied for 16th. Overall, UK shot a 54-hole total of 886 (+24).

Sophomore Laney Frye showed an impressive performance throughout the tournament finishing in the top 20 out of 90 golfers. She completed the tournament tied for 16th shooting 68 on the third day. Overall, Frye shot 218 on 54 holes resulting in five-over-par.

“We knew this would be a challenging week, on a lot of levels, so to see our team dig in and fight as they did the last two days, it makes me proud,” said Head Coach Golda Borst. “We didn’t hit the ball the greatest and we struggled on the greens, but we found a way to get the ball in the hole.”

María Villanueva Aperribay shot 73 on days two and three bringing her total overall score to 222 tying for 35th at the conclusion of 54 holes. Following behind her was Rikke Svejgård Nielsen who finished the tournament tied for 53rd shooting an overall 226. Jensen Castle tied for 65th scoring 228 with Marissa Wenzler rounded out the individual placements for the Cats in 83rd shooting 236.

Collectively, the team recorded 30 birdies in the tournament. Kentucky Women’s Golf announced the start of a new fundraiser Monday to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning with the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.

The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate made history as the first all-women’s regular-season collegiate golf tournament to be broadcasted live on the Golf Channel.

“This team plays with a lot of heart, and we still have things we can improve on, but I’m encouraged by these last two days and I’m excited to get back on the road next week,” stated Borst.

The Wildcats will travel to Mesa, Ariz. next week to complete in the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame.
