Rylea Smith Named SEC Newcomer of the Week

by Chris Shoals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After helping create one of the most exciting comebacks in John Cropp Stadium history over the weekend, sophomore outfielder Rylea Smith was named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith UK’s top hitter in a series win over Alabama, including the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The home run was just the second of her career, and she won the game for Kentucky on a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning as UK upset No. 3 Alabama two games to one.

Smith also had a double in game one, as she went for extra-base hits in two of the three games, and had three runs driven in on the weekend.

Kentucky hosts Morehead State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network, ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Tiffany Greene and former Tennessee All-American Madi Shipman will have the call from Lexington.
