Last Minute Goal Helps Kentucky Play No. 14 Auburn to 1-1 Draw
AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team competed for more than 100 minutes with one less player on the field than No. 14 Auburn, playing the Tigers to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on The Plains Saturday evening. The Wildcats move to a 0-3-3 record, earning their third point of the season.
It was in just the ninth minute of the contest, when a straight red card was accessed on freshman Marie Olesen, marking Kentucky’s first red card of the season. As a result, the Wildcats were forced to compete for the remainder of the game with just nine field players and Brooke Littman in goal, one less field player than the Tigers.
Even while down a crucial starter, Kentucky played an admirable first half, holding Auburn scoreless and without any shots on goal. Meanwhile, UK recorded two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes – Hannah Richardson (’32) and Julia Grosso (’45).
Fresh out of the locker room in the 48th minute, Tigers’ Sarah Houchin scored the first goal of the contest off a corner kick.
Kentucky fired back in the final minute of regulation scoring a goal off a corner kick when the clock ticked 89:36, equalizing the contest. Gretchen Mills took the corner kick, which got kicked out of the penalty box to Peyton Rimko in the back. Rimko shot the ball toward the goal, when Marissa Bosco and Emily Hähnel each got a touch before it went into the net, credited as an own goal.
The contest went to double overtime, even while Kentucky competed with 10 players on the field, including Littman in net. The redshirt senior logged one save against the Tigers, reaching 37 saves this season, and along with the backline, held the Tigers to just two shots on goal in the entire match.
Littman, a Notre Dame transfer, competed all 110 minutes for the third straight game, meanwhile she hasn’t missed a minute of action all season. Joining her for 110 minutes was Julia Grosso, Caroline Trout, Úlfa Úlfarsdóttir, Mills and Rimko.
The Kentucky women’s soccer program will be back on the road next weekend, competing against Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, on Sunday, November 1 at 1 p.m. ET.
