AUBURN, Ala. –
Trying to ride the momentum still lingering from the unprecedented home meet with Louisville, the Kentucky swimming and diving teams are off to the SEC Championships this week in Auburn, Ala.
The women’s team finished off their regular season stretch in style on a four meet winning streak. The Wildcats did not lose a meet after dropping a close one to Arkansas in Fayetteville on Jan. 10. During their four meet stretch the Blue and White posted wins over Missouri, Alabama, Louisville and Cincinnati. The women head into the SEC Championships on the backs of juniors Megan Pulskamp and Casey Miller who have had exceptional outings in the last two meets. Both women set UK records in that meet against Louisville.
Jessie Snowden is the reigning SEC Freshman Diver of the Year and will look to improve upon her outstanding first meet a year ago.
Sophomore Chatham Penrod has also enjoyed a final month of training leading up to the conference meet. Penrod, a red-shirt sophomore, who missed all of last season due to a shoulder injury, is just a mere pace off of breaking both school records in the backstroke events. She has already achieved personal best times in the final weeks of the season.
On the men’s side, the Wildcats have won two out of their last four meet meets, including wins against Missouri and Alabama. Kentucky’s men’s squad has also had an incredible finish to their dual meet season. Despite falling to Louisville, the men had a number of athletes achieve personal best times and qualifying for the NCAA Championships including: Morne’ Boshoff, Elvis Burrows and Tyler Reed.
Eight Wildcats in all received NCAA “B” cut qualifying standards in the dual meet with Louisville. Included are – freshman Morne’ Boshoff – sophomores Lindsey Graessle, Chatham Penrod and Tyler Reed – and juniors Casey Miller, Megan Pulskamp, Elvis Burrows and Anna Sirmon.
The SEC Championships are set to begin Feb. 18 in Auburn, Ala., where a collection of the nation’s top swimmers and divers will converge to decide the SEC crown.
