The University of Kentucky men?s golf team finished the day tied for 13th after the first round of play in the West regional of the 111th NCAA Division I Men?s Golf Championships at the prestigious Gold Mountain Golf Club. The Wildcats carded a 14-over par with a team score of 302.
Oregon leads the 27-team field after shooting a one-over par on Thursday to gain the lead by two strokes after the first round of play. Southern California is tied with UCLA and Washington for the second spot after notching a 291. Pepperdine rounds out the top five with a first day score of 292.
The leaders for the Wildcats after round one is sophomore Alex Volpenhein (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and senior Cale Barr (Versailles, Ky.) who both fired a two-over par 74 to stand tied for 31st, five strokes behind Oregon?s Joey Bendetti who leads the individual standings with an opening round 69.
Sophomore Brian Belden (Emmaus, Pa.) and junior Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) finished with a five-over par, 77, to put both of them in a tie for 82nd place. Senior Brad Doster (Winter Park, Fla.) completes the scoring for Kentucky turning his card after 18 holes with an 83 to put him in a tie for 136th.
The Wildcats are set to tee off in Friday?s second round beginning with Wisconsin and Washington at 3:12 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be viewed on ukathletics.com.
