Jacob Lang Posts Kentucky’s Low Round on Day One of SEC Championship
ST SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Kentucky men’s golf began play at the Southeastern Conference Championship on Wednesday, completing round one with a 5-over par team score of 285 to end the day in 16th place at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course (Par 70, 7005 yards).
Sophomore Jacob Lang posted the low score for the Wildcats in round one, signing for even par after a round which featured 16 pars along with a lone birdie and bogey. He is tied for 45th in an elite field of 80 players. Competing in his second SEC Championship, Lang’s round of 70 on Wednesday was the best of his career at the conference tournament. His 16 pars tied for the most in the field on day one.
Making his SEC Championship debut, and just his third appearance in the starting lineup, freshman Cameron Phillips was 1-over par for his first 18 holes and tied for 52nd on the leaderboard. Both Jack Schoenberger and Jacob Settles were counting scores for the Cats with rounds of 72 (+2), with both players also going 1-under par on their first nine holes of the day before 3-over par inward halves. They stand tied for 61st through the opening round.
Freshman Cole Stockard finished his first SEC Championship round in 74 (+4) strokes but made a team-high four birdies on the day, including on both par 5s (No. 7 and No. 15). His 2-under par total on the par 5s was tied for the best mark in the field. Stockard is tied for 72nd with 36 holes still to play.
Ole Miss is the day one leader at 15-under par collectively, while Oklahoma’s Ryder Cowan is the individual leader at 8-under par.
Two rounds of stroke play remain before the field is cut to the top eight teams for the match play portion of the Championship. Round two will be played on Thursday with Kentucky once again beginning on No. 10 with tee times from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. UK will be paired with Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia on day two.
