Redshirt freshman center Jorge Gonzalez sustained two torn ligaments in his left knee during practice on Wednesday and is out for the season, Coach Rich Brooks has announced.

Brooks said that Gonzalez, the team?s second-team center, had played well in Sunday?s season opener at Louisville and was pushing for the starting job. The coach added that junior Eric Scott, who moved over from defensive end in preseason practice, and senior guard Trai Williams would be the reserve centers behind starter Matt McCutchan. Another backup center, senior Travis Slaydon, is sidelined indefinitely by a shoulder injury.

Brooks also announced that senior defensive end Durrell White has recovered from an elbow injury sustained in the opener. White and sophomore Nii Adjei Oninku are the likely starters at defensive end against Texas State. The coach also said that junior strong safety Roger Williams had returned to Lexington following a death in his family, but was unsure if Williams or freshman Ashton Cobb would be in the starting lineup on Saturday.
