SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? The University of Kentucky will be represented by four field athletes at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11. The championships will take place at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento State University campus.

On Wednesday, senior Gennessa Guzman and junior Ildiko Varga will attempt to qualify for the women?s discus finals at 2 p.m. EDT, while senior Jeff Chakouian will compete at 11 p.m. EDT in the men?s shot put qualifying competition.

Making her first NCAA Championship appearance, Guzman enters the qualifying match-up with a career-best toss from the Mideast Regional, which landed her 22nd in the championship rankings. Varga, a Heves, Hungary native, hopes to improve on her seventh-place finish at last year?s national championships and is 15th in the rankings.

Chakouian, a Seekonk, Mass., native is ranked second in the shot put in the championship standings. The five-time All-American recorded a season-best throw of 66-02.50 at the SEC-Big Ten Challenge, and holds the UK school record with a heave of 66-3. Chakouian finished third at the NCAA Championships last season with a toss of 65-5, an improvement on his 13th place finish in 2003.

Freshman Michael Mason will try to leap into the finals in Thursday?s qualifying competition. Making his inaugural NCAA championship appearance, the Nanoose Bay, B.C., native, will compete at 3:30 p.m. EDT in the men?s high jump.

Mason is ranked 11th heading into the qualifying battle, after making nationals with a season-best leap of 7-2 ? from the SEC Championships. The Canadian has a career-best jump of 7-3 on the books, which he recorded last year at the World Junior Championships.

Finals for the women?s discus will take place at 3 p.m. EDT on Friday, with the men?s shot put being held at 11:15 p.m. EDT. The men?s high jump finals are scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT on Saturday night.
