Seniors Erik Daniels and Gerald Fitch were among eight players named to the coaches? All-Southeastern Conference First Team Wednesday, while junior Chuck Hayes was honored as a second-team selection. It marks the second honor in as many days for the trio as Daniels and Fitch were named second team All-SEC by The Associated Press yesterday, while Hayes joined guard Cliff Hawkins on the AP third team.
Mississippi State forward Lawrence Roberts, a transfer from Baylor, was named SEC Player of the Year, while South Carolina?s Dave Odom was recognized as SEC Coach of the Year. LSU?s Brandon Bass was named SEC Freshman of they Year.
The league coaches began naming All-SEC teams in 1956, though the format has changed throughout the years. This season, the list expanded to two eight-man teams. The SEC also names an eight-man All-Freshman team and has added several awards, including SEC Defensive Player of the Year (Rashad Wright ? Georgia), SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Shane Power – Mississippi State) and SEC Sixth Man of the Year (Scott Hundley ? Vanderbilt).
