Gainesville, Fla. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both fell to South Carolina in a dual meet held at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center at the University of Florida on Saturday, October 13 as a part of the Southeastern Conference East Challenge. The men’s team scored 110 to USC’s 132 while the women were outscored 123.50 to 108.50. The teams then returned to the pool to take part in the SEC Invitational, where both the men and the women placed fifth with scores of 210 and 149, respectively.
Against USC, the men (0-1, 0-1 SEC) were led by sophomore Joey Faltraco’s win in the 200 backstroke (1:48.77), which ranks as the second fastest time in school history. The men’s 400-medley relay team also collected a win with a time of 3:25.43.
The women (0-1, 0-1 SEC) collected four individual wins and a relay win against the Gamecocks. Freshman Caitlin Muldoon claimed victory in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.13) while classmate Marci Vrooman won the 500 freestyle (5:04.39). Sophomore Shawna Sechrist won the 200 backstroke (2:05.42) and senior Debra Hinsley collected a win in the 200 butterfly (2:07.09). The women’s 400-medley relay “B” team also collected a win with a time of 3:57.16.
At the SEC Invitational, Faltraco again put his name on the UK top-ten list with a time of 51.68 in the 100 backstroke, placing him sixth on the list while finishing 10th in the event. Roger Watkins was also hard at work, finishing third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.03. David Kuendig’s 14th-place finish (16:40.46) in the 1650 freestyle closed out the individual scoring for the men.
The men’s 200-freestyle relay “A” squad placed sixth (1:25.86) while the 200-medley relay “A” team placed seventh (1:34.55).
In the women’s lanes, Sechrist clocked in at 1:00.00 for a 14th-place finish in the 100 backstroke while Kendra Trahan collected a 15th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Caitlin Muldoon finished 10th in the (17:33.49), Cami Miller 11th (17:47.30) and Emily Johnston 14th (18:11.98) in the 1650 freestyle to close out the UK individual scoring.
The women’s 200-freestyle relay “A” squad placed eighth (1:39.91) while the 200-medley relay “A” finished seventh (1:49.45).
The Tennessee men won the Invitational with a score of 535 while the Florida women were victorious with a score of 463.
“For it being so early, I was pleased with the way the freshmen women swam and pleased with some of the men’s times,” said UK Coach Gary Conelly. “As a team, I thought we did ok, despite what the score says.”
The Wildcats will return to the pool on Sunday, October 14 against Florida to close out the SEC Challenge.
