The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Cincinnati on Friday, Jan. 26, breaking five pool records during the meet. The men defeated the Bearcats 128-107, while the women downed UC 131-109.
The 23rd-ranked men’s team (4-1) was led by Macon White and Roger Watkins as they broke the pool records during the meet. Two other pool records fell to the Kentucky relays. White won the 500 freestyle and Watkins won the 100 breaststroke. David Tweedie won the 100 and 200 freestyles, while Shaun Zitani took the 100 butterfly and Aaron Workman won the 50 freestyle. Tweedie, Fernando Barros, and Daniel Wimer swam to a one-two-three sweep in the 100 freestyle.
The 24th-ranked women’s team (6-2) was led by Melissa Olson who broke the pool record in the 400 individual medley. Kelli Stein added another win in the 100 breaststroke, Jaime Siegele won in the 50 freestyle and Amanda Bourgeios took the 100 freestyle. Jenaca Pumphrey combined with Shawna Sechrist and Jaime Siegele to sweep the 100 backstroke.
Kentucky’s divers won every event and had one-two punches in the one-meter as Kelli Frost and Sarah Fields, and Clayton Moss and Aaron Kirkpatrick went one-two in the event. Carrie Knoeber added a win in the three-meter and Kirkpatrick recorded a first-place finish in the three-meter as well.
