LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the fifth consecutive year, a member of the University of Kentuckymen’s basketball team has been selected in the first round of the NBADraft. The Charlotte Hornets selected UK all-time shot blocking leaderJamaal Magloire with the 19th overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft Wednesdaynight in Minneapolis, Minn.
Magloire, who opted to return to UK after testing the NBA waters followinghis junior season, is the eighth Wildcat to be selected in the first roundin the last five years. He is the third Wildcat in the Tubby Smith era tobe selected in the first round following Scott Padgett (1999) and NazrMohammed (1998).
Last season, Magloire started all 33 games for the Cats, while postingcareer-bests for points (13.2) and rebounds (9.1) and was named first-teamAll-Southeastern Conference. Magloire’s 268 all-time blocks tops the UKcharts and ranks fifth all-time in the SEC.
Charlotte has a history of drafting UK players. In 1996, the Hornetsdrafted All-American guard Tony Delk with 16th overall selection and in1988, Charlotte made UK standout Rex Chapman their first draft pick infranchise history with the eighth overall selection in the draft.
