Smith, Prince Combine For One-Hit Shutout in 12-0 Fall Win

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior pitchers Shannon Smith and Meagan Prince combined to toss a one-hit shutout, combining with a newcomer offensive explosion by Hannah Huffman, Abbey Cheek and Katie Reed in a 12-0 win over Georgetown College on Thursday night at John Cropp Stadium. The win moves Kentucky to 3-0 this fall, with four games remaining on the docket.

Smith and Prince faced a total of 29 batters, only allowing six baserunners all night, combining to strike out 13 batters. Smith picked up the win, not allowing a hit, and striking out five. Price finished the game striking out eight in her frames. 

Offensively, it was the newcomers that paced the Wildcats, as freshmen Hannah Huffman, Abbey Cheek and Sarah Rainwater all crossed the dish once; with Katie Reed leading the freshman with three runs scored. 

Senior Sylver Samuel went 2-for-3 on the night while also drawing a walk and scoring all three times she was on base. She and senior Kelsey Nunley were the two Wildcats in the lineup to tally multi-hit games, as Nunley went 2-for-2 with a single and a double. 

There were 10 different Wildcats to record hits on Thursday, with Huffman and Cheek both driving in multiple runs. 

Kentucky next takes to the field on Saturday as the Wildcats play host to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. ET in Lexington. Admission to all fall home games is free of charge, while free parking is available in the lots surrounding John Cropp Stadium.
