A pair of University of Kentucky golfers made strong showings in recent summer tournaments. Junior Cale Barr finished second at the 2005 BellSouth Men?s State Amateur in Prestonsburg, while incoming freshman Dan Woltman won his first American Junior Golf Association Invitational at the FootJoy Boys Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
Barr led after the second round and finished just two strokes behind Paducah?s Rick Cochran with a three-day total of 213 (72-67-74) at StoneCrest Golf Course. The Versailles, Ky., native tied for second with Bradley Ruch of Louisville.
?I know Cale was disappointed that he didn?t win but he played great and he?s played great all summer,? said UK head coach Brian Craig. ?We?re excited about having Cale here the next two years to lead this team.?
Woltman won the FootJoy Invitational in a sudden-death playoff against Roberto Galletti, Jr. of Clayton, Calif. Woltman and Galletti, Jr. finished the tournament with scores of 10-under-par 278.
With a one-stroke lead heading into No. 18, Galletti, Jr. hit his approach shot barely left of the green leaving him in position to two-putt for the win. Woltman finished with par, and prepared to congratulate Galletti, Jr. However, Galletti, Jr. missed the three-foot putt for par to win sending the two back to No. 18 tee for the sudden-death playoff tied at 10-under-par.
In the playoff, Woltman hit his approach shot 25 feet from the hole in nearly the exact place Galletti, Jr. had his chance to win from during regulation. He two-putted for par while Galletti, Jr. hit into the left bunker off the tee leading to a bogey.
The momentum shifted in Woltman’s favor on No. 15 when he walked in a 35-foot putt from the fringe for eagle. Galletti, Jr.’s bogey caused a three-shot swing to tie them at 11-under-par.
?This is a tremendous accomplishment for Dan in one of the premiere junior tournaments in the nation,? said Craig. ?This falls right in line with what I know Dan is capable of and we?re excited to have him on campus in August to help pursue our goal of another Southeastern Conference championship.?
