Former Kentucky star John Holmes earned medalist honors on Monday at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament and stands among 32 players who are headed to the PGA TOUR in 2006.
The Campbellsville, Ky., native shot a three-under 69 on the sixth and final day to finish at 408 (-24), three strokes ahead of second-place finisher Alex Cejka. Holmes was the only player in the field with six rounds in the 60s (69-69-68-67-66-69).
Holmes fired a 6-under 66 on Sunday to move into a tie for the lead with D.A. Points with one round left in the tense six-round event. It was a lead he would not relinquish as Holmes had five birdies in a six-hole span Sunday and recorded five on the final day of play. His 32 birdies led the pack while he ranked second with three eagles.
The 23-year-old Holmes, who turned pro after helping the United States win the Walker Cup in August, matched Points (67) at 21-under 339 on Orange County National’s Panther Lake and Crooked Cat course entering play in Monday?s final round.
The top 30 and ties earn PGA TOUR cards for next season, while finishers 31-50 will receive full status on the Nationwide Tour. The remainder of the field will be conditionally exempt on the Nationwide Tour.
