Late Flurry Sends Kentucky Past Iowa State, 4-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A one-goal lead with under 10 minutes to play turned into a four-score victory as Kentucky women’s soccer surged to an important bounce-back result over Iowa State at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Hannah Richardson, Dana Dahm, Mallory Glass and Emilie Rhode powered a strong response to UK’s first loss of the season and allowed the Cats to improve to 5-1-0 overall.

After a scoreless first half, the action picked up in the 59th minute when Richardson put the Wildcats in front with her second goal of the 2022 campaign. Graduate transfer Hailey Farrington-Bentil created the chance, making a run down the left side and taking the ball into the box before eventually giving way to Richardson. The senior was able to connect with a bouncing shot from six yards out to give Kentucky the lead.

That goal seemed to spark the Wildcats attack, as the group mounted substantial pressure on the Cyclones’ defense the rest of the way.

In the 81st minute, sophomore transfer Dana Dahm converted her first goal in a UK uniform with a left-footed blast that snuck just inside the right post. Less than two minutes later, freshman Mallory Glass ran onto the end of a set piece from Ulfa Úlfarsdóttir, finishing with her left foot to make it 3-0 in favor of Kentucky. The Cats would tack on one more in the final minute of the match as freshman Ava Hellner’s first career assist set up Rhode’s first career goal.

Kentucky totaled 14 of its 21 shots in the second half, including six of its eight shots on goal. The effort marked the third time this season that UK has scored four goals.

The win marks Kentucky’s second of the season against a power-five opponent. Coming into the year, the program had not beaten a power-five school in non-conference play since 2016.

Glass and Richardson each recorded their second goals of the season in the contest, joining Úlfarsdóttir and Jordyn Rhodes as multigoal scorers for UK this year.

Redshirt Freshman Tallulah Miller recorded her third shutout in six games, stopping the Cyclones’ lone shot on goal in the 79th minute.

The Cats will be back at the Bell Soccer Complex this Thursday, Sept. 8 when the team plays host to Wright State. Play will kick off at 7 p.m. and can be seen on SECN+.
