Kentucky Tied for Second, Two Wildcats Tied for Fifth after The Landfall Tradition First Round
WILMINGTON, N.C. – A pair of sophomore golfers are tied for fifth place at The Landfall Tradition, while the University of Kentucky women’s golf team is in a share of second place out of 18 teams after the first round Friday.
Playing at the Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina, Kentucky littered its scorecard with birdies for a combined 18. Only Kentucky and Indiana, which is led by former assistant coach Brian May and former player Ivy Shepherd, rolled in as many as 18 birdies in the opening round.
The Wildcats went even-par 288, just one of three teams to go even-par or better. They share second place with 24th-ranked North Carolina, while they’re just one shot back of leader SMU. The Cats also sit ahead of five other teams ranked in the latest top 25.
Kentucky led by multiple shots for most of the first round but the fivesome recorded a combined three bogeys, a quadruple and just on birdie in its final three holes.
C.A. Carter and Karlie Campbell, sophomore roommates, are tied for fifth place on a pair of 2-under-par 70s. It marked both of their first rounds under par this season, while it is Carter’s second in her college career and Campbell’s third.
Carter, a Lexington, Kentucky native, had a team-high five birdies, including a couple on her first two holes of the day, a pair of par-4s on Nos. 10 and 11. She coupled those five birdies with just a trio of bogeys on her scorecard, two on her first nine and one on her second nine.
Carter, who is T5, recently earned the best finish of her college career, claiming T18 at The Johnie Imes Invitation in late September. It is her lone finish inside the top 20 through just seven career events.
Campbell had the steadiest scorecard of the bunch today, boasting three birdies and just one bogey in the first round. Her lone bogey came early, too, on the par-3 No. 4, her fourth hole of the day, then it was all pars and birdies from there. Campbell has a finish inside the top five in her bag already, finishing a career-best T4 at the Paradise Invitational in February.
Three Wildcats actually sit in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, including Cathryn Brown’s 1-under-par 71 to find T14. The junior was leading the tournament for most of the day, too, but she gave a few strokes back on three bogeys in her final five holes Friday.
Brooke Oberparleiter is playing in her first tournament this season. The junior was nearly pairing every bogey with a birdie, sitting just 1-over through 17 holes. However, she suffered a quad on her final hole of the day, the 390-yard, par-4 No. 9. She is 5-over and in a tie for 68th place.
Anastasia Hekkonen also had a tough bout down the stretch, ultimately finishing with a 6-over-par 78. She is in a share of 71st place, with 36 holes still to go at the Landfall.
Kentucky, North Carolina and SMU, the top three teams in the field after the first round, will be paired together for the second round, going off the first tee beginning at 10:09 a.m. ET.
