Anastasia Hekkonen Goes 1-Over to Jump Up the Individual Leaderboard at The Darius

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – A couple of freshmen lead the University of Kentucky women’s golf team after the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club (par 71, 6,413 yards) in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Tuesday.

Anastasia Hekkonen, a freshman from Finland, recorded the best round of the lineup thus far at The Darius. She turned in a 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday, assembling a rather calm round with just three bogeys and two birdies on the par-5 No. 3 and the par-3 No. 13. Hekkonen shed five strokes off her first round to her second round, moving more than 20 spots up the individual leaderboard from T61 to T37.

She has played in just four tournaments in her very young college career, never pacing the team going into the final round.

Karlie Campbell, also a freshman from Ethridge, Tennessee, remained steady in the two spot in the lineup after the second round. She recorded a 7-over-par 78 on Tuesday, sitting in a share of 66th place. She was just 4-over through 15 holes, which would have matched her first round, but she suffered three consecutive bogeys on her last three holes on Nos. 16-18.

The Wildcats went 25-over as a team in the second round Tuesday, as they sit in 17th place in the elite field at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. In fact, 12 of the 17 teams are ranked in the nation’s top 25. They’ll tee off in the final round on hole No. 10 on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. ET, paired with Baylor and Vanderbilt.

Cathryn Brown recorded an 8-over-par 79 in the second round, falling ever so slightly to tie for 80th place. Brown had a solid front nine, going just 1-over, but experienced an up-and-down back nine, which included a trio of doubles.

Marta López Echevarría, who paced the lineup on a 2-over in the first round Monday, couldn’t mirror that success in the second round Tuesday. She charted a 9-over-par 80 in the second round after logging seven bogeys and one double through 18 holes. She is currently in 66th place. Meanwhile, Brooke Oberparleiter put together a 13-over-par 84 in the second round, staying put in 90th place.

Big Blue Nation can watch the final round of coverage Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. ET. Fans also are encouraged to follow live scoring here.
