Wildcats Complete Day One at Tiger Paw Invite, David Hemery Valentine Invite

CLEMSON, S.C. and BOSTON, Mass. – In a split weekend of dual meets, Kentucky’s men’s and women’s track and field team completed the first day of the Tiger Paw Invite and the David Hemery Valentine Invite with one event win in Clemson in the men’s 5000m, along with three second place finishes and 17 placements inside the top 10.

The event win in Clemson came by way of Jack Pendergast recording a 14:25.53 final time in the men’s 5000m final, which also included four Wildcats in the top five.

The three second-place finishers also came in Clemson as Payton Phillips, Kate Powers and Cha’iel Johnson each finishing in the silver position in their respective events. Phillips placed second in the pole vault final at 4.29m, Powers with a 22.57m mark in the weight throw final and Johnson recording a personal-best 1:28.85 in the 600m event.

On the men’s side, along with Pendergast and the 500m event team, the Wildcats earned seven top 10 placements on day one in Clemson, including Deroyce Flemons finishing with a personal best 19.84m distance in the weight throw at the top of the day and Logan Coles placing sixth in the weight throw invite competition at the end of the day.

In Boston, Ed Bird broke his own program record in the 3000m final, beating his previous personal best by nearly two seconds with a 7:51.38 mark. Collins Kiprop Kipngok also broke into the record books with his 7:55.30 mark in the same event, breaking the program’s freshman record and coming in at No. 3 all-time at UK. Kipngok now holds the Kentucky freshman records for the mile, 3000m and 5000m events.

Day two of the Tiger Paw Invite from Clemson, S.C. will begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. EST beginning with the women’s shot put final, followed by a 11:15 a.m. EST start for the Cats the David Hemery Valentine Invite in Boston, Mass. with the  women’s 800m.
