Records Fall on Day Two of Razorback Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A pair of freshmen etched their names in the Kentucky Track & Field record book at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday, as Janet Jepkemboi Amimo set a new school and freshman record in the Women’s 800m and Collins Kiprop Kipngok raced his second career freshman record in the Men’s Mile.
Racing in her only her second collegiate meet—and her first 800m event—Jepkemboi Amimo finished second overall and as the top collegian in the Invitational section of the Women’s 800m. The freshman from Kenya clocked a time of 2:03.27, besting Sydney Steely’s previous school record of 2:03.53 set a year ago on the same track. Jepkemboi Amimo also set the Kentucky Freshman Record in the process and—based on times entering the day of competition—ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in the event.
The Men’s Mile also featured stellar performances from the Wildcats, as sophomore Ed Bird broke the four-minute barrier to win his section in a time of 3:58.18. Bird finished 11th overall and now ranks third all-time at Kentucky. Kiprop Kipngok raced his Freshman Record in the same section as Bird, stopping the clock at 4:00.27 to beat the previous mark by almost five seconds. The Nakuru, Kenya native now ranks seventh all-time at Kentucky in the event and owns two career Kentucky freshman records (5000m).
Sophomore Oneika McAnnuff enjoyed a career best race in the 400m to jump to No. 3 in the Kentucky All-Time performance list. The Breast Works, Jamaica native won her heat in 52.15 seconds, lowering her indoor personal best by over a second and finishing fourth overall (second fastest collegian). McAnnuff only ranks behind Olympic Gold Medalists Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Alexis Holmes in the indoor 400m performance list and, based on times entering today, ranks No. 6 in the NCAA in the event.
In the sprint events, Carlie Makarawu and Sharmelle Holmes advanced to the finals in their respective 60m events, with both runners placing fourth.
A pair of Wildcat Triple Jumpers recorded season best marks today, as All-American Luke Brown placed second in the men’s contest and senior Sophie Galloway placed sixth in the women’s event. Brown leaped 15.96 meters to earn runner-up honors while Galloway finished with a mark of 12.86 meters.
Following the weekend in Northwest Arkansas, the Cats will return to the track next Saturday, racing at the Fairgrounds Invitational at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion in Indianapolis on February 8.
