Six Wildcats Named 2023-24 WGCA All-American Scholars
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Six University of Kentucky women’s golfers have been tabbed 2023-24 Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars, including Cathryn Brown, Jensen Castle, Laney Frye, Brooke Oberparleiter, María Villanueva Aperribay and Marissa Wenzler.
Four of the student-athletes graduated with either a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in May, including Castle, Frye, Villanueva Aperribay and Wenzler, while Brown and Oberparleiter just finished their freshman years.
Collectively, that group contributed to a 290.2 stroke average last season, the third best in program history, and four top-five finishes in 2023-24. They also helped the team reach its first Southeastern Conference Championship Match Play Quarterfinals and the program’s 21st NCAA Regionals appearance.
While turning in a 73.2 stroke average and recording two finishes inside the top 20 last season, Castle recently earned her master’s in marketing. Sporting a 75.4, Villanueva Aperribay just earned her master’s in finance. Additionally, with a career-best 73.3 and three finishes inside the top 20 in 2023-24, Wenzler earned her master’s in kinesiology and health promotion in May.
All three Wildcats are playing professionally, with Castle and Wenzler playing on the EPSON Tour and Villanueva Aperribay competing on the Santander Golf Tour.
Frye put together a team best and second best in program history 71.0 stroke average, boasting five finishes inside the top 10, while she also earned her bachelor of business administration in management in May. She is currently playing on the amateur circuit, with aspirations to turn professional.
Both freshmen, Brown and Oberparleiter, are pursuing degrees in kinesiology and plan to return for their sophomore seasons in 2024-25.
