Kate Powers Improves Freshman Record at NCAA Outdoor Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – The UKTF women got their NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships underway this evening from Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Freshman Kate Powers started things off with a bang in the hammer throw as she improved her freshman record for a fourth time this outdoor season. Her best throw of 215’7”/65.72 meters moved her to third all-time in the UK all-time performers list and placed her ninth in her first NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Junior Payton Phillips kept the momentum going after scoring half a point for the team in her NCAA Outdoor Championships debut. The Georgia native tied her personal best with a 14’1.25”/4.30 meters clearance tying for eighth place in the competition. She was the only Wildcat on the day to earn half a point for the team.
It was a rather frustrating remainder of the evening for the Wildcats on the track with unsatisfactory finishes in the 400, 800, and 4×400 meter relay. The Cats ended the day tied for 33rd overall in the team standings with 0.5 points.
Senior Charity Hufnagel will begin her hunt for a gold medal in the heptathlon tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. ET while junior Luke Brown will seek the top of the podium in the triple jump at 9:20 p.m. ET.
