UKTF Captures Three Medals on Day Two of SEC Outdoor Championships
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Three Wildcats earned medals in the sunshine state on Friday as senior Charity Hufnagel earned silver in the women’s heptathlon, junior Payton Phillips earned silver in the women’s pole vault and junior Jackson Watts earned bronze in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships. The Wildcats also saw 26 combined points from five events and qualified four additional runners from the prelims to the championships on Saturday.
Hufnagel finished second improving her heptathlon school record points total to 5,914 points after earning a top-five result in every event over the two days. Hufnagel’s best result came in the high jump where she won after clearing 6’0.50”/1.84 meters to earn 1,029 points. Her silver medal marks her first SEC Outdoor Championship medal since transferring to Kentucky, and the second SEC Championship medal of her career after winning gold at the indoor championships in the pentathlon earlier this year.
Phillips earned her first career SEC medal after clearing a height of 13’11.25”/4.25 meters giving the women’s side another eight points. It marks her best finish in the event at a championship meet.
Watts concluded the day for the Wildcats in the 3,000-meter steeplechase also earning his first SEC medal after outkicking Alabama’s Hudson Hurst to the finish line down the front stretch. It also marks Watts best finish in the event at a championship meet and the men’s highest points scored so far on the weekend.
The women finish day two in seventh with a total of 23 points while the men are tied for 11th with a total of 10 points. UKTF will conclude the SEC Outdoor Championships tomorrow.
