Wildcats Ready for SEC Outdoor Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky track and field program will return to Gainesville, Florida this week for the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by the University of Florida.

The competition begins on Thursday, May 9 at noon ET with the women’s heptathlon 100-meter hurdles and men’s hammer throw.

Thursday’s competition will consist of track prelims, some field events including men’s and women’s hammer and javelin throw, and the women’s heptathlon. The track will only see one running final on Thursday, the men’s and women’s 10,000 meters.

Friday’s events begin at 11:45 a.m. ET with the resumption of the women’s heptathlon amongst other field event finals such as the high jump, long jump, shot put, and women’s pole vault. The track will see additional prelims in multiple events with only one final, the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The final day of competition on Saturday will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET with the men’s discus throw. Running events will begin at 6:05 p.m. ET with the men’s 4×100 meter relay.

The Wildcats collected six medals at last year’s championships with the women tying for 8th and the men finishing 10th.

Championship Outlook

For each individual event contested at each of the First Round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition.  For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition.  Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon) are not contested at the First Round sites. For combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list will be accepted directly into the Championships. The individual event student-athletes and relay teams accepted into First Round competition will be announced and posted on NCAA.com the week prior to First Round competition. The Wildcats currently have 28 student-athletes in 14 events who would qualify for the NCAA First Round.
