Kentucky Women’s Golf Concludes Time at SEC Championship
BELLEAIR, Fla. – The No. 5-seeded University of Kentucky women’s golf team dropped to No. 4-seeded Mississippi State, 3-1-1, in the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship match-play quarterfinals at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, on Monday.
Jensen Castle, a graduate student who is competing in her last conference championship, was the lone player to win her match Monday. Castle, an All-American and All-SEC selection, competed against Surapa Janthamunee, winning 4&3.
Marissa Wenzler, also a graduate student competing in her last SEC Championship, dropped to Avery Weed, 5&3, while Cathryn Brown, a freshman from Eddyville, Kentucky, took a loss to Izzy Pellot, 3&2.
Coming off a third-place finish during the stroke-play portion of the tournament, Laney Frye played a close match against Julia Lopez Ramirez, the fourth ranked player in the nation. However, Frye, a senior playing in her last SEC Championship, ultimately lost to Lopez Ramirez, 2&1.
Marta López Echevarría was tied with her opponent Chiara Horder before the matchup was suspended. The junior just turned in a career performance Sunday, recording a 5-under in the final round of the conference championship for a top-20 finish and to help Kentucky reach match play for the first time since the inception of the NCAA Championship six seasons ago.
The Wildcats will wait to find out their NCAA Regional destination and seed, which will be May 6-8. The NCAA Championship will be held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California from May 17-22.
