Women’s Tennis Celebrates Seniors, Falls 0-4 to Florida
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s tennis (8-12, 2-9 SEC) fell to No. 13 Florida (12-7, 8-2 SEC) on Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center, 0-4.
The Wildcats celebrated their graduating seniors, Maialen Morante and Makayla Mills, prior to the match. Athletic trainer Emalee Johnson, intern Jenna Putt, and racquet stringer/manager Isabelle Kauffmann were also honored for their upcoming graduations as well.
Beginning the afternoon with doubles play, Florida claimed the point to have a 1-0 advantage. Court 3 was the first to finish as Ellie Myers and Julia Zhu fell to Rachel Gailis and Bente Spee, 0-6. The Gators clinched the point with a win on Court 2 as Carly Briggs and Qavia Lopez defeated Ellie Eades and Zoe Hammond, 6-4. Court 1 was left unfinished with the score sitting at 5-3 as No. 44 Makayla Mills and Elizabeth Stevens were up over the No. 30-ranked pair of Alicia Dudeney and Malwina Rowinska.
In singles play, Court 3 was the first to complete as Eades fell to Florida’s Briggs, 4-6, 0-6. With a 2-0 advantage, the Gators quickly claimed another singles point with a win on Court 5. Lopez defeated UK’s Myers, 6-3, 6-0. Florida clinched the match as Zhu fell to Dudeney on Court 4, 4-6, 0-6.
The Wildcats will close the season on the road on Friday at Tennessee and Sunday at Georgia before looking to the Southeastern Conference Tournament held in Athens, Ga.
