Women’s Tennis Falls to Arkansas in Sunday Contest
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s tennis (8-10, 2-7 SEC) fell to Arkansas (10-9, 3-6 SEC) on Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center, 4-3.
The Wildcats battled until the end of the contest winning the doubles point, as well as two singles points. However, it was not enough to clinch the victory.
Beginning the afternoon with doubles play, Kentucky earned its second doubles point of the weekend to give the Cats a 1-0 advantage. Court 3 was the first to finish the Razorback tandem of Caroli Gomez Alonso and Kelly Keller defeating Julia Zhu and Maialen Morante, 6-2. The Wildcat duo of Ellie Eades and Zoe Hammond equalized the doubles contest defeating Grace O’Donnell and Lenka Stara, 6-3. Clinching the point in a ranked matchup, No. 63 Elizabeth Stevens and Makayla Mills upset No. 36 Morgan Cross and Anet Koskel, 7-5.
Kentucky fought hard through singles play finishing out all six courts of competition. Eades was the first to finish her match against No. 112 Indianna Spink to put the Wildcats up 2-Nil after her 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 3. However, the two-point lead was short-lived as Court 1 completed with Arkansas getting a point on the scoreboard. Stevens fell to No. 31 Gomez Alonso, 4-6, 2-6.
With the score sitting at 2-1 UK, Court 2 finished with another Point Kentucky as Hammond defeated Keller, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). The next court to complete play was Court 5 where Ellie Myers fell to Stara, 5-7, 0-6. Zhu was the next to close out the day fighting hard through three sets before ultimately falling to Cross, 3-6, 6-2, 0-6. With the match tied at 3-3 all, the pressure fell on Court 6 to determine the fate of the day. Mills gave it her all but fell to Kacie Harvey, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.
The Wildcats will be back at Boone Tennis Center next Friday, April 5 and Sunday, April 7 to take on South Carolina and Florida.
