Kate Powers Breaks Hammer Throw Freshman Record to Open Outdoor Season
TAMPA, Fla. — Despite being off for a couple of weeks ahead of the outdoor season, freshman Kate Powers continues to break records as the Kentucky Track & Field program opened the outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida.
On her outdoor debut for the Wildcats, Powers continued to impress everyone this year as on her first attempt in the women’s hammer throw, she threw a mark of 194’6”/59.30 meters, already setting a new Kentucky freshman record. Powers, however, was just warming up.
After two foul attempts and a throw just a touch shorter than the first, Powers achieved 200 feet in her fifth attempt throwing 200’1”/61.00 meters. She was not finished there as on her final attempt she let go of a monstrous throw of 207’6”/63.26 meters officially breaking Ashley Muffet’s throw of 186’6”/56.84 meters set in 2006 by 21 feet to set the new Kentucky freshman record.
Powers becomes only the fifth woman in program history to throw over 200 feet and it marked the fourth time this year Powers has set a freshman record after breaking the indoor weight throw record three times during the indoor season.
In addition to the women’s hammer throw, UKTF won four other events today with 22 finishes in the top 10. The Wildcats will conclude the USF Alumni Invitational tomorrow.
