Wildcats Keep it Steady During Second Round

CLEMSON, S.C. – Kentucky Women’s Golf holds the No. 1 team placement following the second round of the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee (6,386 yards, par 72).

The Cats shot 296 (+8) on the day moving up four spots from their first round of 18. Combining the first two days of the tournament, UK sits at 593 and 17-over-par.

“I’m going to echo what I said yesterday, and that is that we are staying disciplined out here,” said Head Coach Golda Borst. “The conditions today were tougher, and this is a course that will challenge different parts of your game. We knew it would get hard and our team was prepared.”

Kentucky once again faced extremely windy conditions but saw more sunshine with a comfortable temperature. Stronger winds toward the end of the round caused some challenges on the course.

Paired with Furman and SEC rival LSU, UK saw impressive individual play and remained disciplined as the team navigated each stroke.

Finding the most success on par-three holes, the Wildcats hold the highest cumulative tally of +4 on the team/player leaderboard, according to GolfStat.

Sophomore Laney Frye continued her strong momentum from yesterday shooting one-over for a second-round score of 73. She currently sits tied for third with LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad and Furman’s Anna Morgan. The three were matched for today’s round all staying neck-and-neck of one another on The Reserve.

Rikke Svejgård Nielsen and Jensen Castle once again found themselves tied on the player leaderboard. Yesterday the pair shot 76 which added to today’s 73 to put the golfers in 15th place shooting a two-round total of 149 (+5).

María Villanueva Aperribay, tied for 28th, shot a second-round 75 (+5). Marissa Wenzler rounds out the lineup for the Cats shooting 76 (+4) for T65.

“We stumbled some coming down the stretch, and there’s a lot of golf left, but this is what we prepare for – to be in this position before the final round,” stated Borst. “We will continue to focus on our process and on what we can control, and we are looking forward to having some fun tomorrow!”

UK will be paired with Michigan State and SEC foe Florida for the final round of 18. Wenzler will tee off first at 10:18 a.m. She will be followed by Villanueva Aperribay, Svegjård Nielsen, Castle, and lastly Frye.

BIRDIES FOR TORNADO RELIEF FUNDRAISER

Collectively, the team has recorded 20 birdies throughout the Clemson Invitational. Prior to this weekend’s tournament, UK Women’s Golf tallied 148 birdies since announcing the start of a new fundraiser to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning with the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.
