Kentucky Women’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at Alabama

by Chandler Brandes

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama’s golden goal early in the first overtime period was the deciding factor as the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Crimson Tide on Thursday night in Tuscaloosa.

Following the loss, Kentucky drops to 6-9-2 (0-8) on the season while the Crimson Tide move to 9-7-1 (4-3-1).

The Wildcats struck first in the 14th minute when Paige Archbold sent a long ball to the right side which found Marissa Bosco. Holding off a pair of defenders, Bosco fired a shot past the Alabama goalkeeper and into the bottom center of the net.

However, Reyna Reyes gave the Crimson Tide the equalizer in the 36th minute to send both teams into the break with one goal apiece.

Kentucky applied pressure throughout the second half, taking 10 shots to Alabama’s five. Hannah Richardson had an opportunity to give UK the lead in the 64th minute but her shot went just wide, and a last-minute attempt from Jordyn Rhodes in the final seconds sailed high.

Less than 90 seconds into the first overtime period, Alabama sealed a 2-1 victory after a golden goal from Riley Tanner.

The Wildcats return to Lexington on Sunday, Oct. 24 to host Missouri for their final home contest of the season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
