Kentucky Battling at SEC Match Play Championship
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Competing in a match-play event for the first time in the players’ careers, the Kentucky men’s golf team is battling among its 14 Southeastern Conference competitors at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, Alabama. The Wildcats dropped their second matchup of the event by a 3-2 margin to Mississippi State despite the contest coming down to the final head-to-head competition.
UK is in the middle of its matchup with Missouri, but darkness once again halted play for the second straight night. Kentucky picked up two early wins from Jacob Cook and Campbell Kremer to give UK a 2-1 edge against the Tigers. Zach Norris is leading his match with two holes to play and Hugo Archer is in a sudden death playoff when action resumes on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Kentucky will play its fourth and final match of the event and compete against Auburn following the conclusion of its match with Mizzou. Live stats can be found here.
The Wildcats wrapped up their second match of the week with Mississippi State during the morning portion of play on Monday. Cooper Parks and Norris both earned victories for UK as the match went to the wire in a 3-2 win for the Bulldogs.
All SEC 14 teams are competing in a “single-elimination” match play format. Every team is guaranteed to play matches each day. The Wildcats fell to No. 13 Georgia in its opening match and are appearing in pool play the rest of the way.
This marks the third of four fall events for Kentucky in the 2021-22 season. UK will play in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational Oct. 30-31 to wrap up the first half of its season later this month.
