Vanderbilt Too Much for Kentucky in 4-1 Loss on Thursday Night

by Chandler Brandes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Maria Olsen found the back of the net for the second time this season, but it was not enough as the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Vanderbilt on Thursday night at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.

Following the loss, the Wildcats fall to 6-6-2 (0-5) while the Commodores improve to 6-5-2 (3-1-1).

Vanderbilt struck first in the eighth minute to take an early lead after a goal from Raegan Kelley. Kentucky had a pair of shots on target during the opening frame from Ulfa Ulfarsdottir and Gretchen Mills, but both attempts were denied by Commodore goalkeeper Kate Devine.

Back-to-back Vanderbilt goals in the 28th and 38th minutes from Alex Kerr and Madison Elwell, respectively, gave the Commodores a three-goal advantage heading into the break.

Kerr netted her second goal of the game to extend Vanderbilt’s lead in the 53rd minute, but Kentucky got on the board in the 72nd minute. A cross from Mills from the left side connected with Olsen at the top of the 6-yard box, who then sent a header into the upper left corner.

A lightning delay suspended the match in the 78th minute, resulting in a final 4-1 decision.

The Wildcats hit the road as they travel to Georgia on Sunday, Oct. 10 for a matchup at 2 p.m. ET at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens.
