Lance Lang Ties UK Freshman Record at SEC Track and Field Championships

by Tony Neely and Jake Most

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Lance Lang tied the Kentucky freshman record in the 100-meter dash and six Wildcats hit the scoreboard Friday at the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Championships at E. B. Cushing Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M.

Lang zipped the 100 in 10.24 seconds, a personal best that ties Wildcat legend Jim Green for the UK freshman record, previously set in 1967, and fifth-fastest time in school history. Lang finished No. 3 in Friday’s preliminaries and will advance to the 100 final Saturday.

Meanwhile, Annika Williams, Perri Bockrath, Molly Leppelmeier, Josh Sobota, Trey Causey and Brennan Fields each tallied points for the Wildcats by finishing in the top eight of their events.

Completing the women’s heptathon that began Thursday, Williams posted personal bests in the long jump and javelin throw during the three events held Friday.  All totaled, she had four personal bests in the seven events and finished tied for fifth place overall. Her total of 5530 points tied for the second-best mark in school history.

Adding to the women’s total was Bockrath’s fifth-place finish in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Her time of 10:00.93 improved her standing of second place in school history. Leppelmeier also scored for the UK women by finishing eighth in the hammer throw, hurling the weight 207’9″/63.33m.

On the men’s side, Sobota earned two points by finishing seventh in the shot put, heaving the sphere 60’10.75″/18.56m. Causey’s eighth place in the long jump garnered a point with a leap of 24’7.75″/7.56m. Fields ran the 3000m steeplechase in 9:02.02 to finish eighth and gain a point.

All totaled, with eight men’s and women’s events complete, the Kentucky women are in 11th place with nine points.  The Wildcat men are in 12th place with four points.  There will be finals for 13 men’s and women’s events Saturday.

Perri Bockrath

A total of seven Wildcats advanced through Friday preliminaries. In addition to Lang:

  • Tai Brown was sixth in the men’s 110m hurdles, 13.66 seconds
  • Masai Russell and Faith Ross each went 12.99 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles, personal bests for each. Although their official time was identical, Russell nipped Ross at the wire, therefore Russell’s mark is No. 4 in UK history and Ross’ is fifth-best.
  • Jake Allen was eighth in the 1500m run at 3:47.44.
  • Tori Herman was third in the women’s 1500 preliminary with a personal-best time of 4:17.57 that is No. 4 in school history.
  • Dwight St. Hillaire’s 45.27 seconds was third in the 400m.

Along with those mentioned above, qualifiers from Thursday who will race Saturday include:

  • Lance Lang in the 200m (along with the 100m)
  • Dajour Miles in the women’s 200m
  • Kenroy Williams in the men’s 400m hurdles
  • Russell and Ross in the 400m hurdles (along with the 100m hurdles)

Saturday’s final day of action begins at 3:30 p.m. ET. It will be telecast on the SEC Network channel beginning at 6 p.m.  The broadcast talent includes Dwight Stones, Dan O’Brien, John Anderson and Jill Montgomery.

Coach Lonnie Greene’s squads entered the meet with the women’s team ranked No. 23 nationally and the men rated at No. 18.
