Five Wildcats Advance on First Day of SEC Track and Field Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Five Kentucky Wildcats advanced through preliminary heats Thursday at the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Championships at E. B. Cushing Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M.
 
Along with the qualifiers, Annika Williams sits in fourth place after the four events of the first day of the women’s heptathlon. She produced personal bests in the high jump and shot put. 
  • The College Station native cleared six-feet-flat in the high jump for the first time, placing second with a PB 6’0″/1.83m to score 1016 points and move to No. 3 on UK all-time high-jump list.  
  • Williams’ shot put of 40’10.5″/12.46m was third best in the competition and a PB. 
  • She scored 964 points in the heptathlon-opening 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10 (+0.4) and 911 in the 200m with a 24.74w (+3.1) 
  • She totaled 3583 on Thursday, a personal best for day one events. The heptathlon completes Friday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.  
 
Additional highlights of Thursday action included:  
  • Lance Lang cruised into the men’s 200m final with a heat-winning time of 20.36Q. It also is his personal best, improving his No. 3 time in school history. 
  • Dajour Miles qualified for the women’s 200m final on time, crossing the finish line in 23.47q (+0.6). 
  • Kenroy Williams was runner-up in his 400m hurdles heat with a season-best time of 50.54Q to earn an automatic qualification. He had the fifth-fastest preliminary time overall. He moved to No. 3 on the UK all-time list. 
  • Masai Russell and Faith Ross each qualified in the 400m hurdles by posting season-best times. Russell won her heat, second overall in the preliminary in 57.42 seconds, while Ross was fourth overall in the prelim at 57.49. 
  • Charles Lenford Jr. opened the meet with a hammer throw personal best 211’7″/64.50m, which improved his No. 4 mark in school history. He was top thrower in the lower-seeded flight one, but he placed 10th overall, seven feet out of the last qualifier into the final. 
 
The finals for Thursday’s qualifying events will be held Saturday. 
 
The meet continues at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Live results can be found here.

Coach Lonnie Greene’s squads entered the meet with the women’s team ranked No. 23 nationally and the men rated at No. 18.? 
 
During the outdoor season, the women’s team has been led by hurdler Masai Russell and high jumper/multi-events performer Annika Williams.? The men have been paced by sprinter Lance Lang, two-time SEC Newcomer of the Week, along Dwight St. Hillaire in the 200/400-meter dashes and pole vaulter Keaton Daniel. 
 
Following this meet, Wildcats who qualify will prepare for the NCAA East Regionals on May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Fla.
